HEADWATERS ECONOMICS GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION TITLE: Geodataset Name: NA_OilGasAccumulations Geodataset Type: SHAPE Geodataset Feature: POLYGON GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This dataset contains geologic boundaries of undiscovered oil and gas accumulations. The fundamental geologic unit used is the play, which is defined as a set of known or postulated oil and or gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties. The Canadian accumulations are delineated as Total Petroleum Systems, defined as a mappable entity encompassing genetically related petroleum that occurs in seeps, shows and accumulations (discovered or undiscovered) that have been generated by a pod, or by closely related pods, of mature source rock, together with the essental mappable geologic elements (source, reservoir, seal and overburden rocks) that control fundamental processes of generation, migration, entrapment and preservation of petroleum. DATA SOURCE(S): U.S. Geological Survey Scale of Original Source Maps: Unknown Date of Original Source Maps: 1995-2005 (depending on location) GEODATASET EXTENT: North America FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES: ITEM ITEM DESCRIPTION Oil Estimated technically recoverable oil (millions of barrels per square kilometer). Gas Estimated technically recoverable gas (millions of cubic feet per square kilometer). Coalbed Estimated technically recoverable coal bed methane (millions of cubic feet per square kilometer). DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY: The datasets were developed by the USGS and can be downloaded at http://energy.cr.usgs/gov and http://energy.usgs.gov/noga. The Canadian values were taken from the Rem_oil and Rem_gas items of the tps_sumg layer. The U.S. values were derived from the summary tables cbm.xls and total_oilgas_resources.xls. The plays and total petroleum systems within each province or region were merged together, and the estimates of oil, gas and coalbed methane for each were than divided by the area of the merged plays to calculate the amount of recoverable resource per square kilometer.
