TNC’s ecoregional assessment uses a “coarse-filter/fine-filter” approach to conservation planning. Initially, TNC identifies coarse-filter conservation targets: ecological systems, natural communities, and species to target for conservation. The fine-filter targets include rare species or those with limited distribution. The targets include both rare and common ecological systems, natural communities, and species so that all the biodiversity of an ecoregion is represented in the resulting portfolio. After selecting targets, TNC sets conservation goals for each target by considering the population or extent of the target needed to ensure its long-term viability. The portfolio of conservation areas is designed to be efficient and optimal, that is, achieving the most conservation for the least cost.
