HEADWATERS ECONOMICS GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION TITLE: Geodataset Name: NA_WWF-terr-ecoregions Geodataset Type: SHAPE Geodataset Feature: POLYGON GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This dataset describes biological metrics per ecoregion as described in the following publication: Terrestrial Ecoregions of North America: A Conservation Assessment by Taylor H. Ricketts, Eric Dinerstein, David M. Olson, Colby J. Loucks et al., Island Press DATA SOURCE(S): World Wildlife Fund Scale of Original Source Maps: 1:1,000,000 Date of Original Source Maps: 1999 GEODATASET EXTENT: Western North America FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES: ITEM ITEM DESCRIPTION ECO_NAME Ecoregion name BIOME Terrestrial Biome to which an ecoregion forms part of. Values from 1-14 & 98,99 for lakes and Rock & Ice respectively. eco_code Code for ecoregion Tot_rich Total Richness for the ecoregion based on the summation of Amphibians, Reptile, Mammals and Avian. (Tot_rich = Rich_amp + Rich_rep + Rich_mam + Rich_avi) Tot_str_en Total Strict Endemics in the Ecoregion. Value obtained by adding all strict endemic values. Tot_nr_end Total Near Endemics in the Ecoregion. Value obtained by adding all near endemic values. tot_end_p Percent of near endemic species from the total number of species in the ecoregion. This values was obtained by dividing Tot_nr_end / Tot_rich. NPP_AVG Average Net Primary Productivity. HF_MIN Minimum value found in the ecoregion for Human influence indicator. Value goes from 1-100 HF_MAX Maximum value found in the ecoregion for Human influence indicator. Value goes from 1-100 HF_AVG Average value found in the ecoregion for Human influence indicator. Value goes from 1-100 HF_STD Standard deviation value found in the ecoregion for Human influence indicator. HF_SUM Sum of values found in the ecoregion for Human influence indicator. POP90_STD Standard Deviation for 1990 Population. For each ecoregion there are a number of cells, from the population layer (each with a population count value), that fall in the ecoregion. (average, min/max, ranges, standard deviation, totals are obtained.) POP90_TOT Total Population Count for 1990. POP95_STD Standard Deviation for 1995 Population. Value is obtained in the same way as POP90_STD. POP95_TOT Total Population Count for 1995. POP_CHNG Population Change between 1990 and 1995. Difference between POP95_TOT and POP90_TOT. POP95_DEN Population Density for 1995. This value is calculated using the total population count for 1995 and it's divided by the total ecoregion area. PA1 Area (km^2) under IUCN Category (Ia & Ib) within the ecoregion. IUCN- I: Strict Nature Reserve/Wilderness Area: protected area managed mainly for science of wilderness protection PA2 Area under IUCN Category (II) within the ecoregion. IUCN- II: Strict Nature Reserve/Wilderness Area: protected area managed mainly for science of wilderness protection PA3 Area under IUCN Category (III) within the ecoregion. IUCN- III: Strict Nature Reserve/Wilderness Area: protected area managed mainly for science of wilderness protection PA4 Area under IUCN Category (IV) within the ecoregion. IUCN- IV: Habitat/Species Management Area: protected area managed mainly for conservation through management intervention PA5 Area under IUCN Category (V) within the ecoregion. IUCN- V: Protected Landscape/Seascape: protected area managed mainly for landscape/seascape protection and recreation PA6 Area under IUCN Category (VI) within the ecoregion. IUCN- VI: Managed Resource Protected Area: protected area managed mainly for the sustainable use of natural ecosystems. TOT_PA Summation of ALL protected areas in the ecoregion (I-VI). (i.e. S PA1-PA6) PTG_PA Percentage of the ecoregion that is under protection. This value is obtained by dividing TOT_PA / ECO_AREA. (Example: 0.1287 = 12.87%) PTG_NPA Percentage of ecoregion this is NOT protected. This value is obtained by subtracting from ONE the previous value. (1- PTG_PA, Example: 1 - 0.1287 = 0.8713, i.e. 87.13% of ecoregion is NP) MHT ? MHT_SYM ? REGION_SYM ? AMPHRICH Amphibian richness AVESRICH Bird richness CONRICH ?
