HEADWATERS ECONOMICS GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION TITLE: Geodataset Name: NA_mining_AuHg Geodataset Type: SHAPE Geodataset Feature: POINT GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This data layer is a compilation of all active and past mining operations where both gold and mercury were found, as well as all potential occurrences of gold and mercury. US DATA SOURCE: U.S. Geological Survey, 2005, Mineral Resources Data System: U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, Virginia BC DATA SOURCE: BC Geological Survey, Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources US Scale of Original Source Maps: Varies US Date of Original Source Maps: 06/22/2006 BC Scale of Original Source Maps: 1:50,000 BC Date of Original Source Maps: 2006 GEODATASET EXTENT: Western North America FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES: STATUS Development status. Past Producer Mining operation that is no longer active. Producer Active mining operation. Potential Mineral prospect that has seen little or no exploration. COM_MAJOR US mineral commodities (listed in the same field). COMMOD_D1, D2, ..., D6 BC mineral commodities (listed separately in fields D1-6). DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY: The US data is a subset of the Mineral Resources Data System (MRDS). MRDS is mineral resource occurrence data covering the world, most thoroughly within the U.S. The dataset was downloaded from the USGS at http://tin.er.usgs.gov/mrds/mrds.zip and clipped to the study area boundaries. The item COM_MAJOR Like '%Gold%' and '%Mercury%' were selected to create this layer. The B.C. data is from the MINFILE which contains geological, location and economic information on over metallic, industrial mineral mines, deposits and occurrences. The BC data set was downloaded from http://www.em.gov.bc.ca/Mining/Geolsurv/MapPlace/geoData.htm and the items COMMOD_D1, D2, ..., D6 = 'Gold', and then this subset was selected again = 'Mercury' to create this layer. The item STATUS_D = 'Prospect', 'Showing', or 'Developed Prospect' (with PRODUCTN = 'N') was recalculated to STATUS = 'Potential'. STATUS_D = 'Developed Prospect' (with PRODUCTN = 'Y') was recalculated to STATUS = 'Producer'. The two data sets were then merged together.
